Day 23 last day in South Padre

So sad to say goodbye to the beach.  But I'll be back some day.  It's less than 15 hours from home...that's totally doable.  Here's a link to where we stayed. link   This was a perfect place for a late September vacation.  Very few of the condos appeared to be occupied.  We had the hot tub all to ourselves last night! Today we rented chaise lounge chairs and an umbrella and just enjoyed the beach all day long.  We had an amazing dinner at Pier 19 where we were able to see dolphins out the window.   Now were getting things ready so we can get up at 4 am and start driving home.

Day 22 - South Padre Day 3

More lazing on the beach.  You'd think it would get boring...you'd be wrong!  We slept in and lazed on beach for a few hours before heading out to lunch.  Correction, we went down to the beach after sitting on the balcony watching the waves, beach and people.  We are both so happy with our condo!  We're on the 5th floor of a 5 story building and it couldn't be more perfect! After lunch we set out to do some shopping.  When we began this odyssey, I had decided I was going to buy a silk scarf (large square...and nothing else will do) and Mindy had decided she wanted a set of unique windchimes.  We've looked on and off over the weeks and hadn't found anything...so today was the day!  We first went to several shops on the island (where Mindy found some really cool windchimes), then Port Isabel, then we headed to Brownsville.  Success!  I found what I was looking for after only going to 100 stores :) Tomorrow is our last day on the island and we're refusing t

Day 21- South Padre Day 2

Beach, beach and more beach...with a break for a late lunch.   A storm blew in this afternoon which was fun to watch.  Other than that, we didn't do much of anything, which was kind of cool.

Day 20 - We made it!!

First of all let me say how nice it is to be back on Central Standard Time!!  One day we got a call at 8 CST when we were on PCT (6 am!!).  Another issue was our own confusion as to how many hours we drove as we kept crossing time zones.  Annoying.  Another good reason to travel with a smart phone!! Ok, so we drove over 17 hours to get to South Padre Island.  We have a condo on the beach for 4 nights!!  We both love the beach so we're thrilled!!!  And after a 19 day roadtrip we are ready for a vacation!!😁 From our balcony...The waves are SO close. Ok, I tweaked the colors... this is much closer to what the ocean looks like.  Blue/green beachy colors.   Sand art gator Gorilla? Sun is headed down Tomorrow we sit on a beach and relax!!  Yes!!

Day 18 Grand Canyon and the end of Phase 3

Today we went to Grand Canyon and Petrified Forest National Parks.  We are officially done with Phase 3 of our trip - the National Park Phase.  And frankly...we're both relieved.  The National Parks, while beautiful and awe inspiring...were also kind of a bummer.  They were crowded, had limited parking and generally felt like a tourist attraction.  Mindy went to several of these when her boys were young...35+ and 20+ years ago.  Hearing how the parks have changed over the years was kind of a downer.  That being said, I'm so glad I went and was able to this countryside, it is truly unique and majestic. Now that we're done with Phase 3, we both feeling a little energized!  We're ready to get up early tomorrow and begin Phase 4...which we've decided to keep secret.  If I told you what we're doing, you'd think we're nuts.  Better to keep quiet than to confirm that thought! First view of a canyon on the prairie   First overlook into Gra

Day 17 - Zion and Bryce

Today we toured Zion and Bryce National Parks and traveled closer to the Grand Canyon (going there tomorrow).  It was a busy day and we're both a little tired.  Zion doesn't allow people to drive very far in the park, but they have free shuttles instead.  The shuttles were great and had information about the parks playing. Zion The Great White Throne...I think that's what it's called. Mary, these were the best flowers I could find for you today.  Cactus flowers! The Three Patriarchs Mindy taking a selfie while I'm eating apple slices. View overlooking the Virgin River near the Lodge Wish these pictures did this vista justice. The Virgin River - Flash flood warning was low today.   Rocks that caught our attention on the way to Bryce. There was too much traffic to catch a picture at Zion.   But we got this one! Bryce Canyon was massive and almost hard to take in. Bryce Canyon has the largest

Day 16 Death Valley to Hurricane, UT

Not much to report for Day 16.  We drove out of Death Valley, skirted Las Vegas, lunched at St. George, UT and finished the day sunning by the pool in Hurricane, UT.  Tomorrow is Zion! I loved all the stickers people have put on this sign. We weren't able to pull over for the Utah sign... but we got Nevada I told Mindy to pull over because I finally got some cell signal, looked up and saw this.  I guess alien's need cell signal too. Can you say tourist trap? This is as close as we got to Vegas and I'm OK with that! The drive from Vegas to St. George, UT was something!   Road chiseled through canyons with amazing rock formations!   Oh and there was pie once we got there :) On the way to St. George. UT.

Day 15 - Death Valley - Part 2

We made it! First stop at a sand dune.  It almost looks like I'm photo shopped into this picture.  Nope, I was there...and sweating!  It only got up to 103 the day we were there.  So glad we didn't see anywhere near the high of 134! 282 feet below sea level. The sign said the hike to this natural arch was .3 miles.  No problem!   It didn't say it was all up hill in 103 degree heat!   I walked close enough to get this picture and turned around.   Your welcome! Mindy made me. Picture taken in The Devil's Golf Course in Death Valley.   Someone had a strange sense of humor! Devil's Golf Course.   The signs told people to be careful because falling on these  salt formations could cause cuts and broken bones.  Yikes! The hotel, Oasis in Death Valley, actually looked like an Oasis. Drive down 20 mule team canyon.   I assume this is borax...yes, like the borax you can buy in the store.   When it was
