Grand Haven, MI

I started my day with a 3 mile walk along the Grand River boardwalk to the Grand Haven beach and lighthouse.  It was another gorgeous day and lots of people out enjoying the very nice boardwalk area.

 What a gorgeous home!

Then downtown for some window shopping and enjoying the sculptures.

                                                                                    Wonder if she said yes?

The Baker's Wife bakery for peach tea and the best pretzel I've ever eaten!  I've found so many interesting local bakeries along my way.  Wish we had more of these at home.  How cool are these lights!

After hitting some more of the stops on my hosts list, I found myself on the beach.  Wonderful day to just lay on the beach reading and people watching.  The waves were good enough that I was able to watch a 3 or 4 year old being taught to surf by his dad.  Adorable.

 Living the dream!!

Back to my Airbnb to get ready for dinner with my host and her neighbors, Sue and Matt.  Excellent meal and a wonderful conversation!

My host took me on a quick tour of the area.  We drove through the Highland Bluff area and then down to the river to watch the Musical Fountain.

Highland Bluff is a community of 'cottages' build on the sand dunes beginning in the early 1900's .  Very interesting community (link).

Musical Fountain is a nightly music and light displays that was really cool (link).  Below are a couple videos that I took of the fountain.

I discovered one thing about Michigan - they produce more blueberries than any other state.  I had no idea! (link)

Grand Haven is a really nice community and I'm glad I stopped!  My host, Yvonne, was an amazing women who made me feel more like her guest than a client (link).

I'm headed to Springfield, Illinois today.

Day 23 last day in South Padre

So sad to say goodbye to the beach.  But I'll be back some day.  It's less than 15 hours from home...that's totally doable.  Here's a link to where we stayed. link   This was a perfect place for a late September vacation.  Very few of the condos appeared to be occupied.  We had the hot tub all to ourselves last night! Today we rented chaise lounge chairs and an umbrella and just enjoyed the beach all day long.  We had an amazing dinner at Pier 19 where we were able to see dolphins out the window.   Now were getting things ready so we can get up at 4 am and start driving home.

Day 18 Grand Canyon and the end of Phase 3

Today we went to Grand Canyon and Petrified Forest National Parks.  We are officially done with Phase 3 of our trip - the National Park Phase.  And frankly...we're both relieved.  The National Parks, while beautiful and awe inspiring...were also kind of a bummer.  They were crowded, had limited parking and generally felt like a tourist attraction.  Mindy went to several of these when her boys were young...35+ and 20+ years ago.  Hearing how the parks have changed over the years was kind of a downer.  That being said, I'm so glad I went and was able to this countryside, it is truly unique and majestic. Now that we're done with Phase 3, we both feeling a little energized!  We're ready to get up early tomorrow and begin Phase 4...which we've decided to keep secret.  If I told you what we're doing, you'd think we're nuts.  Better to keep quiet than to confirm that thought!
