The Bad Lands

Monday I traveled on to Grand Rapids and checked into my Airbnb.  It's a small one-bedroom duplex in a nice neighborhood.  It's very cozy and heated by a gas fireplace.  Loving being able to watch the flames while I read.  Even if I have to turn up the air conditioning and open a window.

One thing I've learned about South Dakota is that people seem to drive the speed limit.  The highway from Sioux Falls to Rapid City is 80 miles an hour...and the people drive 80 MILES AN HOUR!  I set the cruise at 82 and just kept blowing my everyone.  It's so weird!

Today I started my day with a cup of coffee at the duplex.  Amusing combination of worlds smallest coffee pot and worlds largest coffee cup.
I stopped by Wall Drug to see the road side attraction (link).  Sadly there was some type of siren going off that was loud and annoying.  Apparently the staff wasn't worried but the tourists were all annoyed.  But at least I got to see a giant jackalope, so it was worth the stop.

Then on to The Badlands (link).  Wow!  Just Wow!!  So amazing...here are some pictures that just don't do it justice.

And I saw some wildlife too - a herd of long horn sheep

And a field of prairie dogs

Here's a video that shows the change from prairie to the Bad Lands.  Just doesn't do it justice.

I then went to a local historical museum the Journey Museum (link).  Interesting look at the geology the native tribes of the area.

Late lunch at a restaurant on Main Street then back to my place for a nap (still living the dream).  Then after a dinner, a bike ride.  There is a bike lane on the street at my place and a great park less than a mile away.  So glad I brought the bike!

That's all for today!  Now to plan tomorrow.

Day 23 last day in South Padre

So sad to say goodbye to the beach.  But I'll be back some day.  It's less than 15 hours from home...that's totally doable.  Here's a link to where we stayed. link   This was a perfect place for a late September vacation.  Very few of the condos appeared to be occupied.  We had the hot tub all to ourselves last night! Today we rented chaise lounge chairs and an umbrella and just enjoyed the beach all day long.  We had an amazing dinner at Pier 19 where we were able to see dolphins out the window.   Now were getting things ready so we can get up at 4 am and start driving home.

Day 18 Grand Canyon and the end of Phase 3

Today we went to Grand Canyon and Petrified Forest National Parks.  We are officially done with Phase 3 of our trip - the National Park Phase.  And frankly...we're both relieved.  The National Parks, while beautiful and awe inspiring...were also kind of a bummer.  They were crowded, had limited parking and generally felt like a tourist attraction.  Mindy went to several of these when her boys were young...35+ and 20+ years ago.  Hearing how the parks have changed over the years was kind of a downer.  That being said, I'm so glad I went and was able to this countryside, it is truly unique and majestic. Now that we're done with Phase 3, we both feeling a little energized!  We're ready to get up early tomorrow and begin Phase 4...which we've decided to keep secret.  If I told you what we're doing, you'd think we're nuts.  Better to keep quiet than to confirm that thought!
