Taos - Day 2

Sun!  I woke to a beautiful, sunny, cold day!  Yes!

I went to the The Taos Earthship colony (link) for a tour.  It was kind of disappointing as all there was to see was a Visitor Center.  Tours are only available with 2 week's notice.  I get it, these are people's homes, but still a let down.

I then drove on down the road to Tres Piedras to see more of the country.  The Taos area is not as nice as Santa Fe.  Lots of run down homes and dilapidated cars in the front yard.

Once I made my way back to Taos I went to the Taos Puebla (link).  It's the oldest continually inhabited community in the U.S. dating backing 1,000 years. When I drove up to the Puebla I decided I just wasn't feeling it...so I went back to town.  What I could see was enough to tell me this wasn't going to be an uplifting stop.  I probably should have stopped...but that's one of the joys of traveling alone!  If you're not feeling it you don't have to do it.

After a late lunch and some more wandering around down town I headed back to my Airbnb...I think I've seen all of Taos that I want to.  I'm ready to head home for a few days...I've really enjoyed New Mexico, but 3 days in Taos was probably too much.  I think it's because I'm really not into; 1) Art, 2) turquoise and silver jewellery and 3) native rugs, etc.  Just not much to keep my interest.

So, I'm headed home today with a stop in Sana Fe to see if I can get into Meow Wolf (link).  Then on to the airport for a late departure and a really late arrival.

It will be nice to sleep in my bed for two nights before I head out again to my nephew's wedding.  After that I'm not sure what's next for me.  I've kicking around some ideas but I have less than 2 weeks before a friend's wedding so it will be a quick trip wherever I decide to to.

Day 23 last day in South Padre

So sad to say goodbye to the beach.  But I'll be back some day.  It's less than 15 hours from home...that's totally doable.  Here's a link to where we stayed. link   This was a perfect place for a late September vacation.  Very few of the condos appeared to be occupied.  We had the hot tub all to ourselves last night! Today we rented chaise lounge chairs and an umbrella and just enjoyed the beach all day long.  We had an amazing dinner at Pier 19 where we were able to see dolphins out the window.   Now were getting things ready so we can get up at 4 am and start driving home.

Day 18 Grand Canyon and the end of Phase 3

Today we went to Grand Canyon and Petrified Forest National Parks.  We are officially done with Phase 3 of our trip - the National Park Phase.  And frankly...we're both relieved.  The National Parks, while beautiful and awe inspiring...were also kind of a bummer.  They were crowded, had limited parking and generally felt like a tourist attraction.  Mindy went to several of these when her boys were young...35+ and 20+ years ago.  Hearing how the parks have changed over the years was kind of a downer.  That being said, I'm so glad I went and was able to this countryside, it is truly unique and majestic. Now that we're done with Phase 3, we both feeling a little energized!  We're ready to get up early tomorrow and begin Phase 4...which we've decided to keep secret.  If I told you what we're doing, you'd think we're nuts.  Better to keep quiet than to confirm that thought!
