From the UP to the Island

I made it!    Such an interesting place.   All the Victorian homes are in great shape, the flowers are amazing, the horses and bikes are quaint   and Lake Huron (I have just one Great Lake to go, Lake Erie). I left my Airbnb without meeting my host.   Actually when I left there were 5 cars there...and I never heard or saw anyone.   Just weird.   Great drive!   I stopped at the Northern Lights restaurant in St. Ignace   for a quick breakfast (pie!).   I can tell I should have planned some time to explore Mackinaw City and St. Ignace.   I was too focused on the island.   Don't make that mistake if you're ever up here.   This made me laugh     The ferry ride took only about 15 minutes from Mackinaw City to Mackinac Island  View of Mackinaw bridge from the Ferry  First sighting of The Grand Hotel from the Ferry  View of my hotel from the Ferry docks.  My room is the second dormer to the left of the round tower.  I checked in to my

Day 4 - Final day in the UP

I'm posting this tonight as I'll be on the road early tomorrow - next post from Mackinac Island ( link )!! I wanted to go to Copper Harbor ( link ) today but it's 3 hours away and they have had significant flooding recently.   So, instead I decided to go back to Marquette and do some of the things I missed. I started the day at The Dead River Coffee Roasters...it smelled amazing in there!!   They had a French language radio station playing.   English language jazz, but ads and announcers in French.   Totally cool! I went to the Marquette Maritime Museum and the Marquette Light house tour ( link ).   The highlight of the museum was this antique lighthouse lens.   The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald display was interesting too- Yup it's a song too ( link )   Tour guide said that the line in the song about the lake never gives up her dead is because Lake Superior is so cold and deep that the bodies don't decompose.      On a lighter note...For navigatio

Day 3 - the UP

A storm blew in overnight making yesterday much colder.   I hope this doesn't mean my foot is now going to hurt before every storm.   Sigh... I decided to take a drive up north to Grand Marias - small village north of he Pictured Rocks area.   I first stopped at the Falling Rock Cafe & Bookstore in Munising where I had the strangest conversation. "Take a log" said the cashier. "Excuse me???" Again she says "Take a log" as she points to a basket of birch logs with numbers on them.    This is how they find you when they bring your order.   Why not! Stopped by the Sand Point beach and watched a Pictured Rock kayak tour heading out.    Then a hike on the Sand Point Marsh Trail.   Yup...a marsh so close to the lake. On north to Miner's Beach for breakfast beside a very angry ocean lake.   Oh and I discovered how to add video to this blog (click on the "insert a video" button - sigh).   So,
