Day 1 - The UP

The UP is gorgeous!

After an uneventful night at a pretty sketchy Airbnb (link) I  checked out and went for breakfast at a local restaurant.  Looked over my shoulder to see these guys staring at me...from 12 inches away.   I think I should have picked a different table.  But I have to admit the jar of Jif peanut butter was an amusing touch.

I spent the morning going from waterfall to waterfall as I made my way to Munising, MI (prepare for picture overload.)

Rapid River Falls, Au Train Falls, Wagner Falls, Alger Falls & Munising Falls.  I tried to see Horseshoe Falls but the entrance was through a gift shop and they wanted $8 to see the falls...nope.

Boat tour of the Pictured Rocks on Lake Superior.  It was a beautiful day and the 2 hour trip to view the cliffs was really interesting.  Here's a link to some much better pictures than I took.

Had I been more adventurous I could have taken a kayak tour of the cliffs.  How cool would that be!

Difficult to see but the roots for the tree on the rocks go to the left into the forest.  Apparently there was  a stone bridge that supported the roots - but it fell many years ago and the tree lives on.

Darren, the colors on the rocks reminded me of your Iceland volcano pictures. Oh, and this picture I saw in the gift shop gives you a better idea of the diversity of rocks up here.

I checked into my new Airbnb...it is so nice.  I have the walk out basement (large bedroom, private bath and living room) of a newer home.  So, so, so much nicer than where I had originally booked.  And this one is cheaper.

A local on my boat trip gave me lots of ideas for sightseeing in the UP.  So, I'm off to conquer the day!

  1. I need to look around for RV parks up there. That may be our next camper vacation. It looks beautiful!

Day 23 last day in South Padre

So sad to say goodbye to the beach.  But I'll be back some day.  It's less than 15 hours from home...that's totally doable.  Here's a link to where we stayed. link   This was a perfect place for a late September vacation.  Very few of the condos appeared to be occupied.  We had the hot tub all to ourselves last night! Today we rented chaise lounge chairs and an umbrella and just enjoyed the beach all day long.  We had an amazing dinner at Pier 19 where we were able to see dolphins out the window.   Now were getting things ready so we can get up at 4 am and start driving home.

Day 18 Grand Canyon and the end of Phase 3

Today we went to Grand Canyon and Petrified Forest National Parks.  We are officially done with Phase 3 of our trip - the National Park Phase.  And frankly...we're both relieved.  The National Parks, while beautiful and awe inspiring...were also kind of a bummer.  They were crowded, had limited parking and generally felt like a tourist attraction.  Mindy went to several of these when her boys were young...35+ and 20+ years ago.  Hearing how the parks have changed over the years was kind of a downer.  That being said, I'm so glad I went and was able to this countryside, it is truly unique and majestic. Now that we're done with Phase 3, we both feeling a little energized!  We're ready to get up early tomorrow and begin Phase 4...which we've decided to keep secret.  If I told you what we're doing, you'd think we're nuts.  Better to keep quiet than to confirm that thought!
