Travel to the UP

Up and on the road by 7 a.m. hoping for some side trips and sightseeing as I made my way to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

I stopped for breakfast near Rosedale, Wisconsin at Tabberts...the Sasquatch made me stop
and the cherry pie made me glad I did (even though I had to take it to go since I ate too much.)  Just wish I'd gotten more than one piece.

In Green Bay, Wisconsin I stopped at Cabela's to buy some waterproof hiking shoes.  Even though I packed 9 pairs of shoes (don't judge!) I didn't have anything waterproof other than heavily insulated boots...and now I do.

It was odd seeing Cabela's selling Bass Pro t-shirts.

Great drive along the Green Bay of Lake Michigan.  The UP and northern Wisconsin is very pretty.

Everything went really well until I checked into my Airbnb. It's an older, small roadside hotel that is being updated - and it needs a ton of work.  My room smells musty and I immediately had the beginning of a headache.  A quick look in the shower made me realize I'd need shoes to shower.  Ugh!

I re-read the reviews for this room on Airbnb.  There were eleven 5-star reviews.  Several discussed how clean the room was.  What?!

I'm staying here tonight but I've cancelled the other 4 nights that I'd planned to stay here.  Did I mention there are no coffee shops in the area?

I found another Airbnb for the next 4 nights - fingers crossed.

I went into town for dinner at a restaurant that's been in business for 75 years. I was impressed that they actually have cardboard straws. I'm getting tired of restaurants making me feel bad for using a straw.  I'm not the one buying the plastic straws or the ones that don't wash the rim of the glasses well enough to drink off of.

Give me a minute while I get down off my soap box.

I stopped being impressed when they brought my salad.  When they asked what kind of dressing I wanted I said "A vinaigrette"  They brought me a bottle of mystery oil and a some vinegar.  Not really the same.

Back to my room to get ready to head out first thing tomorrow - fingers crossed on tomorrow's room.

In an earlier post I mentioned this door lock (link).  Highly recommend it! None of my rooms have had any additional door locks and I've felt so much better knowing I was actually "locked" in for the night.

Day 23 last day in South Padre

So sad to say goodbye to the beach.  But I'll be back some day.  It's less than 15 hours from home...that's totally doable.  Here's a link to where we stayed. link   This was a perfect place for a late September vacation.  Very few of the condos appeared to be occupied.  We had the hot tub all to ourselves last night! Today we rented chaise lounge chairs and an umbrella and just enjoyed the beach all day long.  We had an amazing dinner at Pier 19 where we were able to see dolphins out the window.   Now were getting things ready so we can get up at 4 am and start driving home.

Day 18 Grand Canyon and the end of Phase 3

Today we went to Grand Canyon and Petrified Forest National Parks.  We are officially done with Phase 3 of our trip - the National Park Phase.  And frankly...we're both relieved.  The National Parks, while beautiful and awe inspiring...were also kind of a bummer.  They were crowded, had limited parking and generally felt like a tourist attraction.  Mindy went to several of these when her boys were young...35+ and 20+ years ago.  Hearing how the parks have changed over the years was kind of a downer.  That being said, I'm so glad I went and was able to this countryside, it is truly unique and majestic. Now that we're done with Phase 3, we both feeling a little energized!  We're ready to get up early tomorrow and begin Phase 4...which we've decided to keep secret.  If I told you what we're doing, you'd think we're nuts.  Better to keep quiet than to confirm that thought!
