Day 3 - the UP

A storm blew in overnight making yesterday much colder.  I hope this doesn't mean my foot is now going to hurt before every storm.  Sigh...

I decided to take a drive up north to Grand Marias - small village north of he Pictured Rocks area.  I first stopped at the Falling Rock Cafe & Bookstore in Munising where I had the strangest conversation.

"Take a log" said the cashier.

"Excuse me???"

Again she says "Take a log" as she points to a basket of birch logs with numbers on them.   This is how they find you when they bring your order.  Why not!

Stopped by the Sand Point beach and watched a Pictured Rock kayak tour heading out.

Then a hike on the Sand Point Marsh Trail.  Yup...a marsh so close to the lake.

On north to Miner's Beach for breakfast beside a very angry ocean lake.

Oh and I discovered how to add video to this blog (click on the "insert a video" button - sigh).  So, here's the lake as well as some water falls from the other day.  Fingers crossed that you can actually play them.

Grand Marias was very small with not much to see or do, but they did have a farmers market (yes!).  So I looked around and then headed back.

Apparently this route is a favorite for motorcycles because I saw lots of them!  It was a pretty drive and the colors were just beginning - will be beautiful in a few weeks.

I headed back a different route and ended up having dinner at the Englewood Inn.  I opted for the non-vegan pasty...this seems to be a regional thing because I've seen them advertised a lot.  It was kind of like a pot pie...but not at all.  It was a great crust with veggies and beef enclosed but without any sauce or gravy.  Apparently some people eat them with gravy or ketchup on top.  I ate mine as is and really enjoyed the crust and veggies.

FYI - it's pronounced like 'PASS- tee'

Then back to my Airbnb.  This place is very nice but I've been here 3 nights and I still haven't met my host.  He wasn't there when I arrived, but we'd texted about how I could get in.  I've heard him and seen him out in his garden, but I still haven't meet him.  It seems kind of weird but I think he's just giving me my space...but once again I'm so happy I brought my door lock thing.

Off to see what I can discover on my last day in the UP!

Day 23 last day in South Padre

So sad to say goodbye to the beach.  But I'll be back some day.  It's less than 15 hours from home...that's totally doable.  Here's a link to where we stayed. link   This was a perfect place for a late September vacation.  Very few of the condos appeared to be occupied.  We had the hot tub all to ourselves last night! Today we rented chaise lounge chairs and an umbrella and just enjoyed the beach all day long.  We had an amazing dinner at Pier 19 where we were able to see dolphins out the window.   Now were getting things ready so we can get up at 4 am and start driving home.

Day 18 Grand Canyon and the end of Phase 3

Today we went to Grand Canyon and Petrified Forest National Parks.  We are officially done with Phase 3 of our trip - the National Park Phase.  And frankly...we're both relieved.  The National Parks, while beautiful and awe inspiring...were also kind of a bummer.  They were crowded, had limited parking and generally felt like a tourist attraction.  Mindy went to several of these when her boys were young...35+ and 20+ years ago.  Hearing how the parks have changed over the years was kind of a downer.  That being said, I'm so glad I went and was able to this countryside, it is truly unique and majestic. Now that we're done with Phase 3, we both feeling a little energized!  We're ready to get up early tomorrow and begin Phase 4...which we've decided to keep secret.  If I told you what we're doing, you'd think we're nuts.  Better to keep quiet than to confirm that thought!
