Day 7 - Astoria, OR to Newport, OR

Did you know you can't pump your own gas in Oregon?  It's so weird!  The attendant said that only Oregon and New Jersey still have laws on the books that won't let you pump gas. Oh and he didn't have to have any training for his job. Basically he just had to grow up in another state so he knew how to pump gas! Geez.

But Oregon is amazing!!  My favorite so far.
We checked out of our hotel in Astoria, OR (The neatest little town!) and headed south along Highway 101.  Stops at Cannon Beach, Lincoln City, and many others until we stopped for the night in Newport.  Highway 101 runs not only along the ocean, but through several small towns.  We bought a tour book that has come in very helpful to make sure we don't miss any of the sights.

We're booking our hotels when we stop for lunch and it seems there are plenty of options available for reasonable prices.  For instance, tonight we're staying in a condo on the beach (ON THE BEACH!!) for around $130.  Not bad when we split it two ways.

Happy to see the Ocean!

Mindy in her happy place.

Haystack Island, Cannon Beach, OR

I hope you can zoom in on this...so much life on this rock.

Tillamook cheese factory.
Not that much to see, but a good place to stretch your legs.

What an amazing bequest to the state.

Stop Along Otter Crest Loop
I just wish the pictures could do this place justice.
You need to go to Oregon and see it!!
Ok, so you can't see them...but there were thousands of seals in the water.
Sitting on our condo balcony at Nye Beach Newport Oregon waiting for the sunset.
Time to plan for tomorrow!

Day 23 last day in South Padre

So sad to say goodbye to the beach.  But I'll be back some day.  It's less than 15 hours from home...that's totally doable.  Here's a link to where we stayed. link   This was a perfect place for a late September vacation.  Very few of the condos appeared to be occupied.  We had the hot tub all to ourselves last night! Today we rented chaise lounge chairs and an umbrella and just enjoyed the beach all day long.  We had an amazing dinner at Pier 19 where we were able to see dolphins out the window.   Now were getting things ready so we can get up at 4 am and start driving home.

Day 18 Grand Canyon and the end of Phase 3

Today we went to Grand Canyon and Petrified Forest National Parks.  We are officially done with Phase 3 of our trip - the National Park Phase.  And frankly...we're both relieved.  The National Parks, while beautiful and awe inspiring...were also kind of a bummer.  They were crowded, had limited parking and generally felt like a tourist attraction.  Mindy went to several of these when her boys were young...35+ and 20+ years ago.  Hearing how the parks have changed over the years was kind of a downer.  That being said, I'm so glad I went and was able to this countryside, it is truly unique and majestic. Now that we're done with Phase 3, we both feeling a little energized!  We're ready to get up early tomorrow and begin Phase 4...which we've decided to keep secret.  If I told you what we're doing, you'd think we're nuts.  Better to keep quiet than to confirm that thought!
